Ageless Male: Can This Nutritional Supplement Really Boost Testosterone?

Ageless Male is a line of health supplements optimized to support male health and virility.

Can Ageless Male really boost testosterone levels? How does it work?

We break down the entire Ageless Male lineup, explore the medical research for the active ingredients and compare these products to similar health supplements.

Let’s get started.

What is Ageless Male?

Ageless Male is a proprietary blend of nutrients and herbal extracts designed to optimize the natural production of testosterone and other male hormones.

This formula doesn’t “stimulate” testosterone — despite what many resellers are claiming.

Ageless Male simply offers the body all the nutrients needed to efficiently manufacture its own testosterone.

For example, some of the main ingredients in the blends are vitamin D, Vitamin B3, B6, and B12, and zinc. None of these nutrients directly stimulates testosterone production — but if any of them are deficient, the body will have a hard time making testosterone levels.

You can think of this as building a house (testosterone is the house). In order to build the house, you’ll need raw materials like bricks and some mortar. Running out of any of these building materials can prevent you from being able to complete the house.

Ageless Male serves as a way to provide the body with all the raw materials it needs to make testosterone.

Does Ageless Male Really Work? Is It Snake Oil?

Ageless Male works — but not to stimulate testosterone production. You can’t take this formula and suddenly boost your testosterone levels beyond normal limits.

This product is a nutritional formula designed to help men achieve and maintain normal testosterone levels.

This means the formula works best when testosterone levels are already low as a result of nutritional deficiencies or stress.

Most of the ingredients in the formula are simple nutrients — such as vitamin D3, B3, B6, B12, and zinc — all of which are involved in one way or another with the production of testosterone.

Another ingredient in the mix — ashwagandha KSM-66 is a herbal extract useful for reducing cortisol levels in the bloodstream. When cortisol levels are high, testosterone levels drop.

All in all, Ageless Male is a great supplement to use daily to support optimal male reproductive health. As the name implies, this formula works great for older men to ameliorate the natural decline in testosterone levels that happens with age.

Ageless Male Ingredients: Breakdown & Research

1. Vitamin D3

[Ageless Male Max & Ageless Male Performance]

Vitamin D is naturally produced in the skin with exposure to UV light from the sun. Supplement vitamin D is also available to make up for a lack of sun exposure during the winter months or in people who don’t get at least 15 minutes of direct sun exposure per day.

Vitamin D acts like a hormone in the body. It’s primarily involved with bone density regulation and calcium balance — but it’s also involved in the production of other steroid hormones like testosterone [1].

Studies have shown that as sun exposure levels go up, testosterone levels rise along with it [2].

A clinical trial involving 65 men found that a daily dose of 3300 IU of vitamin D for 12 months led to double the levels of vitamin D and a 20% increase in testosterone levels compared to the placebo-control group [3].

Other studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation in healthy men leads to a mild increase in testosterone levels after several weeks [4].

Vitamin D is one of the easiest measures a man can take to optimize his testosterone levels. This is because vitamin D deficiencies are very common in the modern era — affecting about 41.6% of adults in the United States [5].

Populations living in far-north regions or those with darker skin have an even higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. In the United States, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Hispanic and African-American populations was reported to be as high as 69.2% and 82.1%, respectively. Globally, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is thought to be around 1 billion people [6].

Vitamin D is a great addition to the Ageless Male formula to support the production of testosterone — however, the dose use is only half of the dose used in the majority of medical research on the subject.

2. Niacin (Vitamin B3)

[Ageless Male Max]

Niacin is required for energy production in the body. It’s used to make a compound called NADPH, which is a chemical form of energy the body uses to drive everything from cell division to the production of enzymes and hormones.

Animal studies have shown doses of 800 mg/kg of niacin or higher resulted in dramatic improvements in testosterone levels [11]. In this study, niacin increased testosterone levels in healthy rats, as well as diabetic rats with testosterone levels below the healthy range.

3. Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)

[Ageless Male & Ageless Male Max]

Vitamin B6 is another important vitamin used for the production and metabolism of testosterone and other male androgens.

Once absorbed, vitamin B6 is converted to pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP), which goes on to play a vital role in well over 100 individual enzyme reactions. We need PLP for energy production in the cells, blood cell production, glycogen storage, gluconeogenesis (the production of sugar), and much more.

Steroid hormone receptors were recently found to have a specific binding site for PLP — which suggests this compound plays an important role in the regulation and function of these hormones — which includes estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Studies have shown that low vitamin B6 status can lead to a reduction of testosterone levels and a faster rate of testosterone metabolism and breakdown [12].

3. Cobalamin (Vitamin B12)

[Ageless Male Max]

Vitamin B12 isn’t directly correlated with testosterone levels — however, it plays an important role in the production of red and white blood cells, energy metabolism, homocysteine metabolism, and much more.

B12 is a useful addition to the Ageless Male formula because it’s required for optimal energy metabolism and fat burning.

Vegan diets are notoriously low in vitamin B12, which is mainly obtained from the diet from the consumption of meat and other animal products. Low B12 levels is linked to muscle weakness, fatigue, dizziness, mood changes, and dizziness.

4. Zinc

[Ageless Male & Ageless Male Max]

Zinc is an important cofactor for the production of testosterone. Studies have shown that restricting zinc intake directly leads to lower testosterone levels [7].

Another study looked at the impact of supplemental zinc on men with and without zinc deficiencies. The study found a dramatic improvement in testosterone levels and sperm count after taking zinc — but little to no effect on the men with adequate levels of zinc [8].

This element is a great addition to the Ageless Male formula to prevent low testosterone caused by zinc deficiency.

5. Magnesium

[Ageless Male]

Magnesium is required for over 300 individual enzymatic reactions in the human body. Getting enough of this mineral is essential to remaining healthy — and alive. At least one of those enzymatic pathways is responsible for the production of testosterone.

Magnesium deficiencies can lead to lowered testosterone, reduced bone density, anxiety, and loss of muscle mass.

Magnesium is normally very abundant in our food. It’s the 7th most abundant element in the earth’s crust, which is then absorbed into fruits and vegetables we eat.

However, in recent decades the solid our food is grown in is becoming depleted of important trace minerals like magnesium (and zinc). As a result, magnesium deficiencies are becoming more common every year.

In 2016 a report estimated that 10 – 30% of the population has subclinical magnesium deficiencies [14].

6. L-Citrulline

[Ageless Male Performance]

L-citrulline is an amino acid naturally produced by the body. Supplemental L-citrulline is used to improve blood flow to the penis to improve the ability to form an erection.

This amino acid doesn’t improve erection status directly — it merely serves as a nutritional precursor to enable the body to produce other chemicals that lead to an erection.

L-citrulline is first converted to L-arginine, which is then converted to nitric oxide, which then stimulates the production of cGMP. It’s this end product, cGMP that causes blood vessels in the penis to widen and allow blood to flow into the erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa) — causing an erection.

7. L-Arginine

[Ageless Male Performance]

L-Arginine is one step above L-citrulline in the conversion to nitric oxide.

Ageless Male Performance includes both amino acids to support the production of nitric oxide and cGMP because both amino acids have different absorption rates.

Studies have shown that taking both amino acids together provides a greater boost in nitric oxide activity [15].

8. Flax Seed Extract

[Ageless Male Performance]

Flax seed (Linum usitassimum) extract is rich in omega-3 fatty acid, which is essential for human health.

There are two types of essential omega fatty acids — omega 3 and omega 6.

Scientists believe omega-3 fatty acids are primarily converted to anti-inflammatory messengers, and omega-6 fatty acids are converted to pro-inflammatory messengers [16].

The ideal ratio of dietary omega 6 to omega 3 is 4:1 — but experts believe the average ratio today is closer to 16:1 [17]. This is thought to be a major contributing factor for the high prevalence of inflammatory disorders and heart disease in the population.

While omega 3 fatty acids don’t offer any direct benefit to erectile function or testosterone levels, it’s important for male health in general by helping to balance the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio from the foods we eat.

5. Ashwagandha KSM-66™

[Ageless Male Max]

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a medicinal plant species from Asia. It has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for treating infertility, hormone balance, low energy, poor immune function, and more.

KSM-66 is a standardized extract of ashwagandha guaranteed to contain 5% withanolide content by weight. The withanolides are a group of compounds produced by the plant that are responsible for the majority of the herb’s benefits. Most ashwagandha extracts contain somewhere between 1% and 3% withanolides by weight.

Today, ashwagandha KSM-66 is primarily used as an adaptogen — which means it has the ability to increase the body’s natural resistance to stress. The most common use of the herb is to reduce stress-related symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, and burnout. It works by supporting the adrenal glands — which is the organ that makes stress hormones such as cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.

It’s through the herb’s impact on cortisol levels that allow it to optimize our cortisol levels.

Research has shown that elevated cortisol levels can lead to a reduction in testosterone production [9].

There are several high-level studies available that test the impact of ashwagandha KSM-66 on testosterone levels.

In one study, 60 men were given ashwagandha for 3 months to see how it affected testosterone levels and fertility. The study found ashwagandha increased testosterone levels in the men by up to 22% and lead to dramatically higher viability in semen samples [10].

6. NOXPerform (Spectra™)

[Ageless Male Max]

NOXPerform is a proprietary blend of over 20 ingredients designed to boost nitric oxide production. The manufacturer of NOXPerform claims the supplement can boost nitric oxide production by 64% — however, there have been no official studies performed on the formula to confirm this.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a chemical messenger involved in forming an erection. When a man becomes aroused, nitric oxide stimulates the production of other chemical messengers like cGMP that cause blood vessels at the base of the penis to expand and allow more blood to flow into the erectile tissue — resulting in an erection.

The NOXPerform formula combines substances known to support the production of nitric oxide, with other vasodilators, circulatory stimulants, and antioxidants.

NOXPerform Includes:

  1. Coffee Bean Extract
  2. Green Tea Leaf Extract
  3. Broccoli Sprout
  4. Onion Bulb Extract
  5. Acerola Fruit Extract

7. Testofen® (Fenugreek Seed Extract)

[Ageless Male]

Testofen is a standardized extract of fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum). This extract is guaranteed to contain 50% fenuside by weight — which is the active ingredient for the herb’s hormonal-balancing benefits.

120 middle-aged men taking Testofen were tested to measure changes in male androgen concentrations in a study published in 2015 [13]. The study concluded that “Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract is a safe and effective treatment for reducing symptoms of possible androgen deficiency, improves sexual function and increases serum testosterone in healthy middle-aged and older men.”

This ingredient is only found in the original Ageless Male formula, along with zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6.
